چکیده

Weconsider the task assignment problem to heterogeneous parallel serverswith switching delay, where servers can be switched off to save energy. However, switching a server back on involves a constant server-specific delay. We will use one step of policy iteration from a starting policy such as Bernoulli splitting, in order to derive efficient task assignment (dispatching) policies that minimize the long-run average cost. To evaluate our starting policy, we first analyze a single work-conservingM/G/1 queue with a switching delay and derive a value function with respect to a general cost structure. Our costs include energy related switching and processing costs, as well as general performance-related costs, such as costs associated with both means and variability of waiting time and sojourn time. The efficiency of our dispatching policies is illustrated with numerical examples. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Hybrid Meta-heuristic Algorithm for Task Assignment Problem

Task assignment problem (TAP) involves assigning a number of tasks to a number of processors in distributed computing systems and its objective is to minimize the sum of the total execution and communication costs, subject to all of the resource constraints. TAP is a combinatorial optimization problem and NP-complete. This paper proposes a hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm for solving TAP in a ...

A Novel Protection Guaranteed, Quality of Transmission Aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment Algorithm for All-optical Networks

Transparent All Optical Networks carry huge traffic and any link failure can cause the loss of gigabits of data; hence protection and its guarantee becomes necessary at the time of failure. Many protection schemes were presented in the literature, but none of them speaks about protection guarantee. Also, in all optical networks, due to absence of  regeneration capabilities, the physical layer i...

Energy-Aware Probabilistic Epidemic Forwarding Method in Heterogeneous Delay Tolerant Networks

Due to the increasing use of wireless communications, infrastructure-less networks such as Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) should be highly considered. DTN is most suitable where there is an intermittent connection between communicating nodes such as wireless mobile ad hoc network nodes. In general, a message sending node in DTN copies the message and transmits it to nodes which it encounters. A...

Task assignment in multiple server farms using preemptive migration and flow control

Existing task assignment policies proposed for assigning tasks in stand-alone server farms are not efficient in multiple server farm environments because they have not been designed to exploit the properties of such environments. With the emergence of high speed networks and operating systems that have features such as preemptive migration, the importance of designing task assignment policies fo...
